New SUMMONER class: Salan
« on: January 02, 2014, 08:12:40 PM »
I am planning the ranger on the downlow, going to release it when its mostly done and use it as a hype machine... but I love the idea of CREATING things, I find it drives me ... so I was going to start the design of a second work in progress class. "The Summoner"  And involve you the community in shaping it.   This will be a community involvement program where I will do all the work on the actual programming of it, but you 'all' get to help shape the class!

what to name it?
what theme should it follow?

My personal feelings:

No high damage dealing attacks, rely on the pets for the damage.
Attacks are used to pass DEBUFFS onto enemies instead of damage.

A lot of pet centric BUFF skills to make your pets stronger and more dangerous

Single summon strong pets vs numerous weaker pets (like the necromancer) work really well.

What type of 'weapons' should be allowed, I think tieing summons to gear choices is ideal, as the class itself won't have damage output in the normal sense we need SOMETHING to force the player not to play a purely defensive build  in their gear / stats.

STR, DEX, FOCUS, VIT effecting summons.

better summoning effects like with vanilla Tl2 shadowling warrior (each skill point and a stat effect how much damage the warrior does) rather then hidden base stats on the units themselves.

I'd lean towards the humanoid general, myself. Engineers seem to have the robotic summons going pretty well as is. Didn't your class topic have a General class that fit the latter idea really well? :P

yes, it did.

The engineer misses the big robots and the actual dwarves themselves :)

An Elemental Summoner would be fun and i think it would fitt in pretty well both lore-wise and for gameplay, debuffs enemies with poison, lightning, fire, ice and physical.

It's also perfect for what what you mentioned:

"No high damage dealing attacks, rely on the pets for the damage.
Attacks are used to pass DEBUFFS onto enemies instead of damage."

Lore could be that it was a human from DF that escaped into the elementals realms and made a contract with the king/queen of the elements and are now able to summon the elements at will, or something like that, could also tie in the lore to have him be a hero of some kind that helps bringing an end to the horrors in DF etc.
What was once dead, can be made into servants of death and destruction. Feast on the innocent, slaughter the weak and punish those who would stand in your way!

There is a 4 boss segment of DF based purely on the elemental realms...

the problem with this would be figuring out the summons they would have.  Elementals obviously, hell hounds... there aren't that many 'elementalish' monsters in the game, but i can also steal from tl1 where there were various other elementals.

Robotic, Humanoid, Elemental, nature, undead (different from necromancer)... hmm

How about a spiritualist that can summon different spirits for combat.

Heroic
- Summon heroic spirits
- Protective/light spells

Neutral
- Summon neutral spirits
- Neutral utility spells

Chaotic
- Summon chaotic spirits
- Chaotic/leech destruction spell

The spirits can be gods, past heroes, legendary characters or even the DK bosses before they are corrupted.

I personally like nature animals and elementals with a preference for nature animals if I had to choose one. Would be cool if you could do a combination.

My idea would work something like this:

* You can only have one nature animal out at a time (bear, cat, fox, whatever)
* Each nature animal has a different effect / ability (like an AOE bleed for the bear, stun for the cat)
* You  can then summon multiple elementals to augment you and your pet
* For example a wisp to provide a DoT heal, a Treant to provide extra armor (barkskin), a Fire elemental to add a burn proc to your pet's attack.

I don't know if it's possible to have an always active summon though, something you summon once and it is with you until it dies. The nature animal would be permanent and the elementals would be temporary with high mana costs.

ya its not a bad idea, could call that one a shaman so to say... mixture of druidic and elemental love.

The ONLY reason I am personally shying from nature is the ranger has plans to have some of that in his skill trees already, and Ghost has plans for a Warden class as well.

This sounds pretty good to me. A dual charge bar like the warlock (HEROIC - CHAOTIC) - the neutral path would just take half from each.

Ghost like summons (read: transparent/translucent); golden, white, cyan for heroic and dark purple, blue, red for chaotic.

I think a Shaman class would be pretty cool. Totems, spirit animals, elementals, two-handers/dual-wield/shields/staves/wands... should be good.
